2010 Shelby GT-500 Production Limited At 2000 Units

Story by Sam Haymart

Lower than expected cars to be built likely means higher prices.

07-11-09 Update: Since this story ran, Ford has said that the internal document sent to dealers in which this story is based is "inaccurate". Whether the dealership ordering document was inaccurate at the time it was sent or after news of it went public is not known. But we will see how many cars end up being produced at the end of the day and make judgments at that time.

07-09-09: Those hoping to get their hands on a new 2010 Ford Shelby GT-500 without a massive dealer mark-up due to a slow economy might want to think again. Ford has told dealers that they will be limiting total 2010 model year production of the Shelby GT-500 to only 2000 units, likely keeping demand and transaction prices higher.

A dealership in Pennsylvania shared on the Team Shelby website that production had been set at 2000. Some dealers have received one or two of the some 300 cars shipped thus far and you can see them on Ebay already. The some 1700 cars that have not been produced will be mostly headed to dealers that will only be getting one of the 540hp snakes.

Reasons for this low production have not been widely announced, but production company wide has been set lower than in the past 2-3 years. The economy and auto market is still reeling from losses in many areas. Many dealers are still sitting on 2008 and 2009 Shelby GT-500's and are having a hard time selling them even at or below MSRP. So it does make some sense that Ford would not build 5000-7000 or more of the high-dollar Mustangs given the current environment.

The good news is that the low production numbers will make the 2010 Shelby GT-500 a more rare commodity, with some color combinations possibly being very rare in the future. It might not be surprising to find out that less than a dozen of some color and option schemes will be built.
