The Dodge Challenger SMS 570 has made its debut earlier this year. But Mustang enthusiasts have been waiting with baited breath to see what he would once again do with the 2010 Mustang. While the MJ Acquisitions / Saleen Inc drama continues to unfold, Steve Saleen has shown that he has not let all that business stuff get in the way of developing what might be one of his greatest Mustang works yet.
The 2010 SMS 460 and SMS 460X Mustangs build on Steve Saleen’s legacy of top drawer styling and engineering. Are we editorializing here? Yep. These new cars represent the style and character that Saleen enthusiasts had come to know in the early years of the company before it had been taken over by corporate bean counters.
The SMS 460 and SMS 460X feature the signature Saleen look with a sculptured body package that was developed with long time Saleen designer Phil Frank. That DNA is evident in the dual bar graphics, scooped side rockers, rear whale style wing, and even in the slick new front fascia. What is new to the game is a handsome set of SMS wheels that are fresh, big and bold.
The look is unmistakably Saleen yet fresh and crisp in a way that is much on the same page with the new 2010 Mustang’s inherent design language. Like some of the notable Saleen Mustangs from the past, this new SMS 460 and SMS 460X are developed and created on a level far above what many “tuners” tend to turn out.
Under the skin is much of what you want and expect from Steve Saleen. The SMS 460 has a supercharged and intercooled 4.6 liter engine with 470hp. For those what want to really have it all the SMS 460X has a hand built 5.0 liter 3V engine with a supercharged and intercooled 655hp. That is some pretty wow stuff, and from what we hear, these horsepower numbers are the real deal.
The suspension, brakes, interior and much of the mechanicals have been completely re-engineered and upgraded with all of the stuff that you would expect. A complete list is below so we will spare you the long hand on it. Suffice it so say that Steve Saleen knows what enthusiasts want and expect from a car with his signature on it. And make no mistake, the SMS 460 and SMS 406X are his cars and the only true “Saleen Mustangs”, as the company has made clear recently.
