Collectors: Plenty Of 2010 Mustang Diecasts To Choose
Story by Sam Haymart
A year later and plenty of models to choose from
10-26-09: Diecast cars serve two purposes in the Mustang realm. They give owners of a Mustang a chance to have a model of their car and they give collectors something to cherish and enjoy. For owners and enthusiasts of the 2010 Mustang a number of diecast models are now on the market headed into the Christmas season that range from small and affordable to large and detailed.
When the 2010 Mustang was announced last year, the first diecast model of the car was also released on the very same day. Ford had worked with Maisto to offer the 2010 Mustang convertible in 1:18 scale, in which a special edition was handed out in various locations across the country at the unveiling. This car came in special 45th Anniversary packaging and was made in only one color, Red Candy Metallic. These are more difficult to find and tend to cost more. The same Maisto 2010 Mustang convertible is available in Performance Red and Sunset Gold Metallic and commonly retails for about $30.

Other new entries to the diecast market are the 2010 Mustang GT coupes by Jada. Part of their BigTime Muscle series, these 1:24 scale models feature a more customized vibe with big huge Shelby Halibrand style wheels tucked tight underneath. These are downright cool looking and come in Black, Silver, Red Candy and Metallic Blue. They retail for around $23 and there are also smaller versions of these by Jada in 1:32 scale which retail for around $12.
For the small scale enthusiast, a number of manufactures have created 1:64 models. Hot Wheels offers the 2010 Mustang in three colors to date, Red, Metallic Blue, and Yellow. Even though Yellow is not a factory color for 2010, we have seen in past years that Hot Wheels colors tend to foreshadow future offerings. So don’t be surprised to see Yellow as a factory color in 2011 or 2012.
Jada got into the 1:64 scale arena this year too with their highly detailed “Next Gen” series 2010 Mustangs. Currently they are offered in Black with Red stripes, or White with Red stripes. Though they are the size of a Hot Wheel car, they are high quality and detail with real rubber tires, unique wheels, and opening doors. They are part of a new wave in small scale diecast where detail and collecibility are the key.
Some of the future offerings coming out by Christmas are some new higher end 2010 Shelby GT-500 and Mustang GT offerings from Greenlight. These have a high level of paint quality, detailing inside and out, and have limited numbers of production. Companies are taking pre-orders on the GT-500 which comes in Grabber Blue and Performance Red. These retail for about $60
It is also expected that Carroll Shelby Collectibles, Franklin Mint and AutoArt will be joining the fray very soon, but final models, colors and pricing have not been announced. Stay tuned.
