Sales: Roush Performance enjoys big 2006

Story by Sam Haymart

Jack Roush produces over 2200 customized Ford Mustangs, F-150's and Focus models.

10-06-06: This week Livonia based custom builder of Ford vehicles, Roush Performance has released production information for their 2006 model year run. The numbers provide an illuminating window into the company’s growth in the specialty car sector, despite a down year for the American auto industry as a whole.

Even with gas prices hovering around $3.00 a gallon during most of the 2006 model year production run, Roush was able to build and sell over 2200 customized Ford Mustangs, F-150’s and Focus models through their nationwide network of dealers. The Mustang made up the bulk of production at 1835 units, with the F-150 trucks coming in at around 315 units.

This bodes well for Roush Performance in a market that is bearing down on high performance tuner cars since Ford is now competing with its own Shelby Mustangs. When you consider that the average Roush customized Mustang is around $42,000 — the same price range as many other high performance cars in the world, the numbers are remarkable.

Roush built a number of rare special editions of the F-150 trucks in 2006 including the 500RC, the 445hp Champion Edition Stage 3 and others. The latter was a black and yellow truck commemorating the Dewalt #17 race car driven by Matt Kenseth, 2003 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion. The Dewalt Champion Edition was equipped with the ground pounding 445 hp ROUSHcharged V8 and full Stage 3 package. The special edition is limited to only 17 copies. Roush was able to get a premium for their Stage 3 F-150’s this year as the showrooms are lacking a Lightning version from Ford.

The most popular Roush Mustang was the Stage 1 of which 640 were built, followed by the entry level “Sport” at 510 units. Despite more expensive price points in the $50,000 -$60,000 range, 456 Stage 2 Mustangs and 229 Stage 3 Mustangs were built. The Roush Mustangs recieved some headlines last spring when a custom “one-off” Stage 3 Roush Mustang was sold at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Collector Auction for $65,880

The 2006 model year ranks as one of the highest for Jack Roush’s performance car arm which produced a similar amount of cars for 2005 — also a banner year. In addition, Roush Performance has exploded into the performance parts market in the last 12 months, dramatically expanding their product selection to include interior acccessories, dress up kits and pre-painted body styling parts.
